The Zekkus Trilogy - By Bruce Beauvais

 A Jedi in the Realms

He had trained all his life to become a Jedi, although the title had never been bestowed upon him.  I had been an eternity since the fateful day when Zekkus Zendar was pulled into a black hole.  It would change his life and his soul forever.  He had crash landed his X-wing fighter on a planet that he had never seen nor heard of before.  With his trusty sidekick R6-D9 he set out on exploration of this remote planet.

It had been a planet like no other.  The inhabitants seemed almost archaic.  They did have a great deal of intelligence, but no technology.  Magic was strong here as was the Force.  He met a man named Gridlock.  He would adventure with this man for years and come to call him a dear friend.  They battled evil at every turn in their adventures together.  They had fought creature both large and small.  There were magic users and many other encounters.

On this planet, they had what were called gods.  He fought and destroyed one called Bane.  This had special significance for Zekkus as he believed to have destroyed an actual Dark Lord of the Sith.  Gridlock never knew of this.  In Zekkus’ galaxy, there was a Darth Bane who was one of the most powerful Sith Lords ever to rule the galaxy.  To have destroyed Darth Bane would have been impossible, but if Bane had fled that dimension and come to this world, it may be possible.  He had worried about his arrival to this land.  He often worried about forcing technology on a planet, so in it’s infancy.  He destroyed his ship fighting Bane.  He still had his droid, but hid 6D9 away from this planet’s inhabitants.

He was going to have to live out his days on this planet after Bane’s destruction.  He took the opportunity to become an inventor, but the specter of evil always loomed in the back of his conscious mind.  He did not know much about good an evil when he arrived.  He learned very quickly that good and evil exist amongst each other.  One could not exist without the other.  He and Gridlock had conquered many evils throughout this world.  He worried about the balance of the force and if it pertained to this world’s magic as well.  His connection with the Force was always askew on this world.

Gridlock Reach was the home of Gridlock.  It was a wonderful place of goodness and prosperity.  Evil doers could not even enter its gates.  Many of this world’s Gods had their biggest temples located here.  It was a beautiful walled land.  This is where Zekkus would begin his journey of invention.  He was granted land within the reach by his friend Gridlock.  He broke ground on the Village of Zendar and was sure to have any inventor who wanted a chance to showcase their ideas as place to think freely.  IT was the start of an educational epicenter for the Reach.  It was small, perfect for learning without the distraction of a larger city.

Zekkus used his knowledge only to further growth of the agriculture of the reach.  He left other inventions to local people to work.  He was proud of the village.  He was proud of what he had accomplished.  In his galaxy this would actually be failure for a Jedi Knight.  He had literally put himself in the Agriculture Corps.  He rather enjoyed it.  He used this time to ponder his adventures and what they meant.  He was meditating in his chambers when it all happened.

During his adventures with Gridlock, he had literally died several times. In this world, just because you die-it doesn’t mean you’re dead.  He had nearly passed to another world.  A few times, he wished that he wasn’t resurrected.  He was curious about “the other side”.  His friends wouldn’t let him go.  He returned every time, but in the back of his mind, he couldn’t help but wonder what was there.  While he meditating his chambers, he felt a tremor in the force.  IT was a familiar spark.

It was a Jedi!  He could feel the familiar touch of a Jedi on his mind.  Who was it?  He didn’t know many Jedi Knights as he was pulled away from his training so young.  He stretched out with the force, something he hadn’t done in so long.  He left its presence and searched for that familiar touch of a Jedi’s connection with another.  There it was.  It was more familiar now.  A vision filled his thoughts, General Kenobi.  At least it was reminiscent of General Kenobi, much older than he had remembered.  He seemed more at ease, calm.  He searched in his memory for the vision he recalled of a Red Haired, battle hardened tactician that was General Obi-Wan Kenobi, a hero of their galaxy.  But the feeling was different.

It was a feeling of sadness.  Kenobi was saddened.  He spoke with him in his mind.   He was informed of all that had changed in his galaxy-his dimension.  As things had changed on this planet, things had changed EVERYWHERE!  This spell plague was not just something that had occurred on this planet.  Evil was infesting the whole galaxy.  His original home had become the center of this evil blight.  Now, it had expanded to this world.  His mind was now clear.  The mental block that had clouded his vision was now gone.  He could see this world in a new light.  Things that he had never seen before now made so much more sense.  The “Magic” used here was so similar to the power that he knew as the force was indeed a twisted askew form of the force.  Through knowledge of their world and their connections with this world, wizards could wield great power.

It seems that the “gods” did not have this same type of power.  The powers they wielded came from another source.  It seemed that the more followers these “Gods” had, the more powerful they were.  They could be destroyed, though.  Such a fragile weak link in the armor was almost uncanny.  He spoke with Kenobi about the now self proclaimed Emperor Palpatine.  How did he get his great power?  How did he keep it?  Then, in a rush of cognoscente thought, the answer came.  The people!  The followers!  They made these gods what they were!  In both worlds, the gods could be simply stopped by sheer ignorance of the people.

He spoke to Kenobi about his ideas and thoughts of this.  Kenobi agreed and spoke of forming a Rebel Alliance against the Emperor.  Zekkus had other plans.  He was not of this world anymore, but amongst it.  He would seek out the “God” that was causing this Plague.  He would help his friend.  He drifted off in his mind to gain more clarity.  Stretching out with his mind, he felt the tendrils of evil which seeped into the land.  Catching every link to the evil took massive amounts of concentration.  He followed every link to its source.

After what seemed an eternity, he found that there were no big pocket of darkness, but several small pockets which all lead to one “god”.  Shar was this God’s name.  He was not familiar with this god.  Of cource he never really studied them other than Selune, who had an interest in his powers.  He would travel this plain of existence and find this Shar.  This God had to be stopped.

As Zekkus sought this Shar, a familiar voice bellowed in his mind.  It was Selune herself, but in an odd form.  It’s seems she was talking to him, but not as a God, but as an equal.  “Why do you seek my Other?”  She asked.  It seemed to be an odd question.  He knew she meant what she said, but what did “other” mean?   He had to answer.  She was kind to him while on this world.  “She is the Spell Plague.”  He answered.  “She causes the suffering of the people of this world.” Zekkus continued.  Finding it odd that this was a seemingly normal conversation with a “God”, he had his own questions.  “Why do you speak to me differently?  What has changed?”

“Your confusion is to be expected.  It is not often that one transcends this plain of existence to be among us on their own free will.  Even more concerning is the method you used.  You are one of us now Zekkus.”  She informed him.  “I am a God?  No, that is not true.  I have simply become one with the force.  I have no followers here.  I have no temples.  This can’t be.”  He said.  He did not see himself as a god.  He didn’t feel he was of that caliber.  He was flawed.  He made mistakes.  He could not be a god.

Selune spoke softly.  “Your reluctance does not make you any less of what you are.  Not every god has followers upon ascension.  Though you may not believe this, you were a revered hero during your time on Toril. Many people spoke of your exploits and kindness.  You were a good man.”  Zekkus was stunned.  But it didn’t change anything, he still needed to find this Shar.  This god needed to be stopped.  “Who is this Shar?”  He asked

She sighed.  “Shar is my sister-my Other-my Twin.  She is my opposite if you will.  She seeks pain and misery for this world and always has.  I have spent my time countering her efforts to torture the people of Toril.  I won’t destroy here.  To destroy her would be akin to destroying myself.  I will not do that.”

“Right now at this very moment, forced are at work against my Other.  Cyric is nearly deceased due to the son of Gridlock.  Gridlock will soon ascend to this plain, like yourself.  He is to take the Title once held by the God of Justice, Tyr.   This must be.  This will put balance to this world.  It will be one more step towards balance.”  Selune offered.  “You said Balance.  I spoke of balance on many occasions.  I always believed balance was essential for harmony.  Good can not exist with out evil.  When one surpasses the other, chaos can occur.  I believed this to be true for ages…Is it?”  He asked

“Perhaps, even I am unsure of that.  What I do know is that destinies will be determined in the following days.  We must not interfere.  We can guide the adventurers on the right path, but any direct interference will bring the swift hand of Aeo.”  She said.  “Go now Zekkus and take your place amongst us.  Find your best influence.  Make your love become something to worship.  Expand you horizons, Zekkus.  Find yourself.”  She called out.  With that, she left Zekkus.

As Zekkus pondered his life as a Deity, another voice came to him.  A voice he was not at all familiar.  “I have watched you as the world you know as Toril has changed.  I watched you become physically ill over the destruction.  I watched you give birth to many ideas and inventions.  I watched you grow a village.  I watched you Zekkus.  I watched you grow.  Though you never knew... I watched you.  I knew this day would come.”  The voice said.  “I am Amaunator.  I am the god of Law and Order amongst others.  I once took the name of Lathander.  It was in that time that I had concentrated my love not of Law and Order, but the birth of the new, youth and vitality.  As I have now come back to my original order, I find that I can no longer show the devotion to birth, and vitality of the young as I once did.  Perhaps this may be your love.  I have seen your love of invention and of the new.  Perhaps you may consider this when you search yourself.”  He finished.

The conversation ended as quickly as it had started.  So much to ponder.  Zekkus had never dreamed of this.

Memoirs of a Jedi

I guess when I began to write this, I should have placed dates but dates are trivial and not of consequence.  Too many place an emphasis on time.  Time does not matter…. only life.  If you received this writing, then it must be your destiny.  My name is Zekkus.

My life begins on another “plane”, but that is a whole other story….for another time, if it is your destiny.  If you have heard of my exploits, consider yourself old.  I arrived on Toril long ago when times were much different.  Magic was more powerful as were your gods.  I was found by a great warrior named Gridlock.  We had formed a great friendship right from our fateful meeting.  Your world would not be the same.  THAT is yet another story.  You will find many tales of our exploits. There is no need for me to repeat them.  This writing is much more of a personal nature.

It can be said that my time here was eventful and prosperous for a time.  There are things you may not know.  Although, I had friends here on Toril, I was hopelessly lonely.  As I came from another time and place, things were not what I had hoped for my life.  Gridlock was and will always be my greatest friend and my love for my wife Alexa will never die but a profound loneliness was always with me.  It is difficult to explain.  The lonely feeling was not because of lack of friendship or love, but lack of meeting my goals. There was always something missing inside of me.

On your world, I had conquered Gods, and evils of unprecedented proportions.  I met with the highest of royalty all throughout Toril.  Still, I was from another place.  Things you may not know on this world exist on other worlds, yes there are other worlds.  This may come as a shock to you dear reader.  Very few on Toril know of this existence.  Because of this, you find doubt your own existence.  DON”T!  That is of no matter for this writing unless it is your destiny.  That is what I write to you about today dear reader…destiny.

For years on this world I have pondered my destiny.  From where I began my life, it was thought that your destiny was laid out before you.  Some beings were able to see their destiny, their future in their dreams.  Odd, isn’t it.  That would take some powerful magic, wouldn’t it?  Or does it?  I was in training to become what is known where I come from as a Jedi Knight.  The title is common to your paladin on this world.  As I spent my time on this world, I realized that although powerful magic exists, so does another power…the Force.  The Force is energy that binds all living things.  It exists all around us and penetrates and binds us all together as living things.

To say this is easy, to truly understand this is something completely different.  There is not enough parchment to write just what this means.  The Force has been my focus for much of my later years, and that is why I write this letter, this script to you, dear reader.  Everyone has the potential to use the force and many on this world don’t even understand its existence.  One who can wield this powerful force can be almost unstoppable.  Dare I say that?  Yes I do.

As a young man, I traveled your world along side my friend Gridlock.  I used my powers for good.  I learned to use most of what I needed for battle.  With my powers limited to attacking my enemies, I found little growth in the force.  While Gridlock rid the world of evils with my help, I realized that I needed to take time and learn other things besides fighting.  It seems to me that this was all I did.  I made time to invent and move The Reach forward with farming and various other ventures.  Still, something was calling me.  I had a village called Zendar within The Reach.  Inventors from all of Toril came to expand their own creations.  As much as this prospered The Reach, I still felt my life was eluding me.

It was a time of prosperity for The Reach and for Toril for that matter.  I decided to take time to finally explore your world without interruption.  It was a time of peace.  Now I could take my leave of The Reach and grow with the force unabated.  This was more difficult that I could imagine.  I had created many relationships, friends, and enemies.  This was not something I could plan, something I could let others know.  Even my dear wife Alexa and close friend Gridlock could not know of my plans.  This was not of evil intent or a lie.  How do you just disappear?  How do you leave all that you have known and earned behind?  My dear reader, you just leave.

So, without a lie, or a single whisper, I took my leave of the reach.  It started with a simple note.  The note simply read:  I have left.   I left this for my Alexa and Gridlock.  It was meant to be simple, yet effective.  I began my day in Zendar as normal.  I left my home walked through the town.  I was sure to avoid anyone.  Once I got the the West gate of The Reach, I used what little of the force remained to distract a Titan with a small rock crumble from the Reach’s western wall.  Once he was distracted I left the Reach.  I was now on my own.  My time had come.  No purpose, no gods, no one.  Just me.

The Light of Zekkus

Zekkus Zendar was beloved by many in Gridlock Reach.  He arrived on Toril quite by accident, but left an indelible mark on this land.  Along side Gridlock, they brought an age of peace and prosperity to what is now known as Gridlock Reach.  He had many adventures with his best friend and colleague Gridlock.  Zekkus would eventually become an inventor of things as he grew in age.  Gone were the adventures.  He settled down in his little Village of Zendar hoping to never have to fight again.

It would be years until the Spell Plague would come to Gridlock Reach.  There was nothing the two heroes could do to stop the Spell Plague.  Many things changed throughout the land including Zekkus himself.  His powers as a Jedi apprentice soon would transform into something he could not control.  He could feel himself slipping away from his once strong connections with the force.  He felt his mind shifting from once peaceful thoughts, to thoughts of lunacy.  He warned his villagers to leave Zendar as he felt the village was soon to be filled with evil.  After the villagers left, he burned the village and all of its contents.

Zekkus felt overwhelming evil coursing through his mind, his veins and felt evilness all around him like a hazy hot humid summer day.  He would not succumb to this evil, but felt trapped by the intensity that permeated this once beautiful land.  HIS connection was dying.  Something else was taking this world and he could do nothing to stop it.  He could feel the impending doom for this land.  He wanted to stop it.  He reached out for the force to guide his thought and for the first time in his life, there was no spark.   There was no light only darkness filled him.

He was scared.  He had been scared before, but not like this.  He wondered if the Bane that he and Gridlock had destroyed had come back even more powerful.  He ventured out of his burned out village.  He traveled to the capital of Gridlock Reach to speak to his friend.  Everywhere he looked he saw evil.  Everything he felt or touched was evil.

Zekkus thought this could never happen at The Reach.  He was wrong.  At least he thought he was wrong.  He finally reached the capital.  He needed to find his friend.  He couldn’t get into the castle.  The Evil was so strong that is physically made him ill to attempt to enter the gates.  He tried with all his might.  Every Jedi meditation he tried, failed.  He couldn’t enter the castle.   He knew something terrible had happened to this land.

Zekkus left the reach.  Learning some history while on Tamriel, he left Gridlock reach and traveled as far as he could.  As he got farther from The Reach, the evilness would subside slightly.  It was there, but not as potent.  He traveled as far as he could until he met the ocean furthest to the east.  For the first time during his stay on this planet, he stole something.  He needed to get of off this land.  He took a ship from the docks of some port he’d never seen and traveled until the evil taint left him.

He was tired, exhausted, but finally away from the evil.  He could feel it looming on the horizon as if it were chasing him on the ocean.  He prayed to Selune as he had done many times in the past.  She spoke to him and told him of the Spell Plague and that no one could escape it.  IT would consume him.  She could not help him.  He would have to help himself.  Much of this world was based on a different magic that he was accustomed to.  He would have to work around it if he were to save this world.  This world didn’t know him.

Whatever this spell plague was, it would consume this world if not stopped.  Most beings would be scared to die for a cause.  Zekkus had died several times for a cause.  The greater good was a cause worth dying for.  It was the will of a Jedi.  The only hope for anyone in this world would be in another realm-or dimension.  One could only become truly powerful by transcending their mortal body for a more powerful form.  He had made up his mind.  HE had heard of Jedi Masters becoming one with the force and having the ability to speak beyond their deaths as if they were still in this world.

There was no procedure for this.  He didn’t know how to do it.  He just set sail as far as he could and began a deep Jedi Meditation technique.  He stayed in what seemed to be a deep sleep forever until one day he “awoke”.  He was awakened to new sensations.  Sensations that he had never felt before enveloped his—SOUL.  He had done it!  He was now one with the force.  He had no idea how long this had taken, but he needed to act fast.  There was no time, there was no distance.  He reached out with the never ending force and felt for that familiar presence of his friend Gridlock.  He felt him, but felt a great sadness in his friend.  Things had indeed changed.  He had felt many emotions in his friend over the years together adventuring.  Never had his friend been sad.

He was able to enter the castle now, but how would he speak to his friend.  He reached out to his friends mind and felt that spark.  Gridlock formed a smile on his face.  Yes, he could speak to his friend.  Maybe now he could do something about this Spell Plague.

Zekkus awoke violently from his restful slumber.  He rolled over in his bed and gazed at his lovely wife Alexia.  He was saddened.  He wished now that he had spent more time with her.  She was a beautiful and wonderful woman.  He had seen the future and that future was grim for Gridlock Reach and all of Toril.  He would not allow his connection with the force to be shattered.  He would not allow his friends and loved ones to suffer.  He grabbed only his clothes and left everyone behind…without a word.
